Black Female Therapist in New Jersey Who Understands Complicated Family Relationships

I help Black women understand how family roles, expectations, and relationship patterns shaped the way they show up today so they can stop repeating what no longer works.

What I Know About Us

Understanding the Patterns We Learn in Our Families

Many of us learned early how to read the room keep the peace and be responsible. You became the strong one, the mature one, the fixer, or the daughter everyone could depend on. Those roles helped you navigate your family growing up, but they can become not-so-helpful patterns that follow you into adulthood.

I help Black women understand how those early family experiences influence the way they respond to conflict, set boundaries, manage other people's emotions, and show up in their relationships today. The goal isn't to spend therapy blaming your family or endlessly revisiting the past. It's to understand what you learned and decide what you want to do differently now.

What I Know for Sure

I’m Chrystal Dunkers, LPC

I Know What It’s Like to Be the One Who Holds It Together

I know what it’s like to be the one who keeps going, handles what needs to be handled, and doesn’t always say when something is bothering you. Sometimes staying quiet feels easier than explaining yourself, creating conflict, or risking being misunderstood. I understand how easy it is for that way of functioning to become your default.

We’ll Understand the Pattern and Then Work on What to Do Next

I’m interested in more than what happened. We’ll look at the family roles, expectations, and experiences that shaped how you learned to function and how those patterns are showing up now. Then we’ll work on what you can do differently in your relationships, boundaries, communication, and choices moving forward.

You Don’t Have to Clean Up Your Story for Me

You don’t have to translate your childhood, minimize your reactions, or pretend things don’t bother you. I understand the roles, expectations, and family dynamics that can shape how Black women move through relationships. This is a space where you can talk about your family, say how you really feel, and get support that makes sense for your life.

Let’s Talk About What’s Actually Going On

You already know that something needs to change. You’re tired of carrying the family tension, second-guessing your boundaries, and falling back into the same roles every time something happens.

You’ve spent a lot of time considering what everyone else needs. Therapy gives you space to understand what you need, what you want to do differently, and how you want to show up in your relationships moving forward.
