Supervision Should Be More Than a Requirement
As a Licensed Associate Counselor, supervision is a required part of your path toward independent licensure. But the hours you spend in supervision also represent an important stage in your development as a clinician.
This is where you get to bring the cases that make you question your next step, examine why an intervention may or may not be working, think through ethical concerns, and strengthen the connection between what you learned in graduate school and what actually happens in the therapy room.
My approach to supervision is collaborative, thoughtful, and clinically focused. I want you to understand not only what you're doing with clients, but why you're doing it, in order to develop the clinical judgment necessary to make those decisions with greater independence over time.

Supervision gives us space to examine your clinical work from multiple angles. What we focus on will depend on your caseload, experience, areas of growth, and what is happening in your work each week.

Case Conceptualization
Move beyond identifying symptoms to develop a fuller understanding of the client, the factors contributing to their concerns, and what may be maintaining them.
Clinical Decision-Making
Think through what to address in session, why you're choosing a particular intervention, when to adjust your approach, and how to evaluate whether treatment is progressing.
Treatment Planning & Documentation
Strengthen the connection between assessment, diagnosis, treatment goals, interventions, progress, and the clinical documentation that supports your work.
Risk Assessment & Clinical Response
Develop your ability to recognize and assess safety concerns, determine appropriate next steps, document your clinical decision-making, and seek additional support when needed.
Ethics & Professional Responsibility
Work through questions involving boundaries, confidentiality, informed consent, scope of competence, referrals, consultation, and other ethical responsibilities that arise in practice.
The Therapeutic Relationship
Examine what's happening between you and your clients, including relational patterns, your own responses in session, ruptures in the therapeutic relationship, and how these dynamics may affect treatment.

A Collaborative Approach to Clinical Supervision
I don't expect you to come to supervision with the "right" answer, and my role isn't to simply tell you what I would do.
We'll look closely at your caseload, ask questions, consider different perspectives, and examine the reasoning behind your decisions. There will be times when you need direct guidance and others when I'll challenge you to slow down, think through the case, and determine your own clinical direction.
As you gain experience, our work will evolve with you. The goal is to help you strengthen your clinical judgment, recognize when you need consultation, understand the limits of your competence, and take increasing responsibility for the decisions you make as a counselor as you progress toward independent practice.
How LAC Clinical Supervision Works in New Jersey
Clinical supervision toward LPC licensure is an ongoing process that begins before we hold our first supervision session and continues through verification of your completed supervised experience.
Establish Supervision
Before supervision begins, we'll complete the required paperwork to establish me as your Board-approved clinical supervisor on record and submit your Proposed Plan of Supervision to the New Jersey Professional Counselor Examiners Committee. Supervised clinical hours can begin once the required documentation has been submitted in accordance with Board requirements.
Meet Weekly
We'll meet for individual clinical supervision each week. Sessions will focus on your clinical work, including case conceptualization, treatment planning, interventions, documentation, ethical concerns, risk assessment, and other issues that arise in your work with clients.
Document Your Progress
Throughout our work together, I will maintain supervision records documenting the topics addressed during our sessions and track the supervised clinical experience you complete toward LPC licensure.
Verify Your Completed Hours
Once you've satisfied your supervised experience requirements, I will complete and submit the required verification of your supervised clinical hours to the state as part of the documentation needed for LPC licensure.
Complete Your Supervised Experience
The standard pathway toward LPC licensure requires 4,500 hours of supervised counseling experience completed over a minimum of three years. LACs who meet the additional graduate-credit requirements may qualify for the 3,000-hour pathway completed over a minimum of two years.

Meet Your Clinical Supervisor
I'm Chrystal Dunkers, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) in New Jersey.
I've spent more than a decade providing counseling services across community mental health and private practice settings, working with clients with a range of clinical concerns and levels of complexity. That experience has shaped how I approach supervision: with attention to the individual client, the clinical decisions being made, and the counselor's responsibility to practice ethically and within their scope of competence.
As your supervisor, my role is both supportive and evaluative. I'll provide feedback, ask questions, identify areas that need further development, and offer direct guidance when it's needed. I also want you to become increasingly able to examine your own clinical work, recognize when something requires consultation, and make well-reasoned clinical decisions as you progress toward independent licensure.
Looking for an Approved Clinical Supervisor?
I provide individual clinical supervision for New Jersey LACs working toward LPC licensure.
I work with newly licensed LACs as well as counselors already practicing in community mental health centers, agencies, group practices, and other qualifying clinical settings who need an approved supervisor outside of their employer.
We'll begin with a consultation to discuss your current work setting, licensure status, and supervision needs and determine whether we're a good fit to work together.
A note about clinical placements: Point & Pivot provides clinical supervision only and does not currently offer employment or clinical placements. You must have your own qualifying clinical setting where you can accrue supervised counseling hours.

How much does individual supervision cost?
Individual clinical supervision is $100 per session.

What happens when I complete my required hours?
Once you've completed the supervised clinical experience required under our supervisory relationship, I will complete and submit the required documentation verifying those hours to the state.
